medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Call for Papers: Medieval Latin
International Medieval Congress
Leeds, 2004
With apologies for cross-posting.
You are cordially invited to submit a paper proposal for the International
Medieval Congress, to be held at the University of Leeds, 12-15 July, 2004;
proposals for sessions of three related papers are also welcomed. This
particular CFP involves papers on medieval Latin topics, particularly those
touching on the general topic for this IMC, ?Clash of Cultures.? This theme
commemorates the sack of Constantinople in 1204.
Suggested or possible areas of research (according to the conference website)
include but are not limited to:
- Intercultural borrowings
- Religious division
- ?Culture", "race", "ethnicity"
- Rules, regulations and laws: defining whose culture is in and whose is out
- Definition by others and self-definition
- Secular versus religious
- Language of difference and foreignness
- Social memory and reworking the past
- Illustrations of difference and foreignness
- "The Other" - and whose "other" and why?
- Masculinity versus femininity
- The status and treatment of minorities
- Muslims, Latins and Orthodox in the Mediterranean
- Transmission of ideas
- Political rivalries (e.g. Byzantium and the West, Normans in Sicily)
- Language contact
The texts discussed should be (for the most part, at least) in Latin and papers
should deal with writing strategies and not simply treat the texts as so many
transparent vehicles for an all-important content.
More information on the conference generally may be found at the following URL:

The deadline for submission of proposals for this topic is July 31, 2003.
