Fanfare to the future: IAML(UK & Irl) launches Access to Music 10-year
strategy
Today, the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and
Documentation Centres United Kingdom and Ireland Branch launched its 10
year plan for the national music resource Access to Music. Music Libraries
and Archives in the United Kingdom and Ireland: current themes and a
realistic vision for the future.
Whilst recent years have seen tremendous developments for music libraries,
there are timeless issues which continue to be relevant and which must
continue to be addressed against a background of change.
The strategy, funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme, and
developed by Pamela Thompson, Chief Librarian at the Royal College of Music
and Malcolm Lewis of Nottingham City Libraries, reaffirms the importance of
music to the economy, culture, society and learning, and the central
enabling role played by music libraries and library staff. It emphasises
the continuing need to ensure access to music collections and services, to
provide expert advice and guidance for users of those collections and the
need for sustainable management and delivery of services.
Speaking at an event to mark the golden jubilee of the UK and Ireland
Branch, Pamela Thompson said "Music is all around us. It appeals in one
form or another to almost everyone in the world, transcends national and
political boundaries. Music in libraries can give immense added value
economically, culturally and educationally and this report identifies and
discusses issues which must be addressed in order to continue to deliver
this, and sets out a strategy to kick-start the process which builds on our
achievement of the last five years."
