Nelson Universal Handatlas
This was one of a number of atlases which Bartholomew prepared for Thomas
Nelson. It was published in 1926 and was,I believe, the only edition of this
title produced.
Alphabetical indexes were not always present in Nelson school atlases but in
others such as the "Graphic Atlas and Gazetteer of the World" edited by J.G.
Bartholomew first published by Nelson in 1891 the gazetteer is purely a list
of placenames with, an abbreviated descriptor of the type of feature eg Tn
(town), Spt (seaport), etc followed by its location by district or miles
from a major city but no lats or longs or page numbers. However in "The
Royal Shilling Atlas" by J.G. Bartholomew, publ by T. Nelson, 1891 a full
index is included with name, country or district plus lats. and longs. but
no page numbers. This practice appears to have been followed into the
1950's. Other publishers used differing styles eg "The Student's Atlas"
constructed... by John Bartholomew and published by William Collins, 1870
includes the name, lats and longs. plus page number.

I will admit maps have always been interesting to me but I recently picked
up an old hard cover book of maps and being unable to find much information
is what's sparked a deep curiosity. Your website mentions the John
Bartholomew Award which is what inspired me to ask, as the books maps are
all by John Bartholomew&Sons Ltd. The book itself has no IBN or date, some
maps are in color, is complete, the cover is broken but in reasonable
condition and it is titled The Nelson Universal Hand-Atlas 260 maps of the
countries chief cities of the world with index. It was printed in Great
Britain at the Press of the Publishers Thomas Nelson&Sons, Ltd. What
interested me is that in the preface he mentions "the Great War necessitated
revision" and "that reference is given not only the the country in which the
name occurs, but also to its approximate latitude and longitude". He also
goes on stating the addition of an Alphabetical List and a few Statistical
Tables, does this mean this is the first he used these? Where can I find
more information or others interested?
I hope to hear from you soon.
