medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (3. June) is the feast day of:
Clotilde (d. 545) Clotilde was a Burgundian princess, married off to the
not-yet-Christian King Clovis of the Franks. Gregory of Tours reports that
Clotilde was an important influence in bringing Clovis to Christianity.
After her husband's death. C. retired to Tours, leading a devout life,
building churches, etc.
Liphardus of Orleans (d. c. 550) Liphardus was a well-born and successful
lawyer of Orleans. At the age of 40 he retired and became a deacon, then
retreated to a hermitage where he and a disciple lived a very stringent
life. The bishop was impressed and ordained Liphardus, after which he
encouraged him to found the monastery of Meung-sur-Loire.
Kevin (Coemgen) (d. c. 618) The Irish Kevin was educated by monks and then
became a hermit at Glendalough. He was brought to public notice in an odd
way: while he sat outside his cave meditating, a cow came by and licked K's
feet---and then went home to produce miraculously abundant milk. Naturally
the owner wanted to know where the cow had been grazing, so he followed her
and found Kevin. Kevin then founded the monastery of Glendalough. Perhaps
the most beautiful tale told of Kevin is that God decided to honor him by
flattening out all the hills around Glendalough, creating a rich farmland
for the monks---but Kevin refused, not wanting to discommode the wild
animals with whom the monks shared the land.
Davinus of Lucca (d. 1051) Davinus was an Armenian who came to the West on
pilgrimage to Rome and Compostella. On the way, he fell ill and died at
Lucca, where he was venerated as a saint.
Andreas Caccioli (blessed) (d. 1254 or 1264) Andreas was a priest, one of
Francis of Assisi's first seventy-two followers. In the squabbles that
followed Francis' death, A. argued for a strict interpretation of the
Franciscan Rule against Elias; he was persecuted and imprisoned for doing
so.
