medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (14. June) is the feast day of:
Elisha (8th cent. BCE) Prophet and disciple of Elijah.
Marcian of Syracuse (d. c. 255) According to Sicilian legend, Marcian was
sent by St. Peter to Syracuse as "first bishop of the west." But he
probably lived in the mid third century. According to another legend, he
was killed by being thrown from a tower by Jews.
Methodius I of Constantinople (d. 847) Methodius was born in Syracuse,
later moving to Constantinople after he had become a monk. He became
deeply embroiled in the iconoclast controversy, strongly supporting
Patriarch Nicephorus in his stand against the iconoclasts. The emperor
didn't appreciate this. He had M. seized on his return from a trip to
Rome, flogged, and imprisoned under very harsh conditions for seven years.
Released by the emperor's iconodoule successor, M. became patriarch in 843.
Anastasius, Felix, and Digna (d. 853) Two Spanish monks and a nun. These
were the first of the martyrs of Cordoba, beheaded at the orders of the
caliph of Cordoba.
Joseph the Hymnographer (d. c. 845-883) Joseph was born in Sicily, but
fled at the time of the Muslim invasion. He became a monk in Thessalonica,
then joined the Studion monastery in Constantinople. As his nickname
implies, he was a famous hymn-writer.
Richard of St. Vanne of Verdun (d. 1046) Richard was one of the leading
monastic reformers of the 11th century, a friend of both Odilo of Cluny and
Henry II as well as an important reformer in his own right.
