Hi everyone,
This is just a short reminder about the Geological Society's Fermor
Flagship Meeting that will be held in Cardiff in August. The title of
the meeting is "World Class Mineral Deposits & Earth Evolution". The aim
of the meeting is increase our knowledge of mineralization processes and
also to highlight the role that mineral deposits can play (through
access to samples or the huge 2D and 3D datsets generated by exploration
and mining activities) in understanding wider geological problems.
Topics that fit this include the "origin and evolution of life",
"development of different tectonic regimes over geological time" and the
"evolution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere".
There are seven sessions planned for the meeting, covering various
applied and non-applied themes.
1. Tectonic evolution and metallogenic potential throughout Earth
history. 2. Evaluation and sustainable utilisation of mineral resources.
3. Sedimentary mineral deposits: do they constrain the ancient
atmosphere and hydrosphere? 4. Origin and evolution of life: evidence
from ancient mineral deposits. 5. Catastrophism and the development of
mineral resources. 6. New techniques for understanding mineral deposits.
7. Earth processes and exploration for super-giant mineral deposits.
A first class group of invited speakers will be giving keynote lectures
in each of these sessions.
Contributions are welcomed from those who would consider themselves
economic geologists and those who wouldn't normally dream of giving
themselves that title.
Basically, if you have a novel way of using mineralization, or mineral
deposit samples to tackle wider issues in Earth Science, this meeting is
aimed at you.
Similarly, if you are interested in wider issues of Earth evolution,
such as the development of the earliest continents and the evolution of
the atmosphere and oceans, this meeting is aimed at you.
