medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. May) is the feast day of:
Conleth (d. c. 520) Conleth was a monk and bishop at Kildare. According
to Cogitosus, C. was a metalworker, who made the altar vessels for Kildare;
the crozier of St. Finbar is attributed to him. A later account tells that
he went on pilgrimage to Rome against St. Brigid's wishes, so he was eaten
by wolves on the way.
Catald (7th-8th cent.) An interesting case of a cult that developed about
a saint of whom nothing is known. Catald is venerated in southern Italy,
Sicily, and Malta; it all started in 1071 when his remains were found in
Taranto. The coffin contained a pastoral staff of Irish workmanship,
inscribed "Cathaldus Rachau." It seems likely that Catald was an Irish
monk in peregrinatio on the continent.
Solangia of Bourges (d. c. 880) Born to a peasant family, Solangia vowed
herself to virginity at a young age. There is clearly no such thing as an
ugly consecrated virgin, though: a son of the count of Poitiers fell in
lust with S. while she was out minding the family sheep. He tried to rape
her; when she resisted, he murdered her. S. then got up, picked up her
head, and carried it in her hand to a nearby church.
Antoninus of Florence (d. 1459) A native of Florence, Antoninus became a
Dominican. He rose quickly in the hierarchy of the order, becoming in time
vicar-general of the Dominicans of the Strict Observance. Upon his return
to Florence in 1436 he founded the convent of San Marco, and played a
prominent role at the Council of Florence in 1439. A. was appointed
archbishop of Florence in 1446; he lived in poverty, was notoriously
generous to the poor, cared personally for plague victims, and in short was
one of the most outstanding bishops of the fifteenth century. He was
canonized in 1523.
