medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. May) is the feast day of:
Victor (d. 303) One of several saints of this name, today's Victor was
known as Victor Maurus; he was a north African member of the Praetorian
Guard, martyred at Milan in the reign of Maximian.
The Apparition of St. Michael the Archangel. St. Michael appeared on Monte
Gargano in southern Italy on this day, sometime in the sixth century. His
shrine there became one of Europe's great pilgrim attractions.
Indract (d. c. 700) An interesting legend. According to William of
Malmesbury, Indract was the son of an Irish king. He was travelling with
nine companions, but they were attacked and killed by robbers. Somehow
they came to be regarded as martyrs, and their bodies were removed to
Glastonbury. By the fifteenth century, the number of companions had been
increased to one hundred.
Wiro (d. c. 753) The Northumbrian Wiro was part of the northern English
missionary drive in Frisia. He became bishop of Utrecht in c. 741.
Peter of Tarentaise (d. 1174) Peter was born near Vienne. He became a
Cistercian in c. 1122, then abbot, and from 1142 on was archbishop of
Tarentaise. He instituted a serious reform of his diocese, becoming an
exemplary bishop. His charitable work was apparently so central that he is
credited with miracles of multiplying food, as well as healing. But Peter
got sick of his fame and aministrative tasks; he ran away in 1155 and was
only discovered living as a laybrother in a Swiss Cistercian monastery a
year later. Forced to return to his see, he did more good deeds and was a
very active supporter of Pope Alexander III during the schism of the time.
Peter was canonized in 1191.
