medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am assisting a colleague of mine in the English Department who wishes
to locate one or more medieval pilgrimage sites with certain specific
characteristics. I've spent quite a bit of time and effort looking in
art history books, and searching the internet. It finally occurred to me
that many members of this list will have visited pilgrimage sites, and
could perhaps point us in the direction of specific sites. The required
characteristics are:
1. The object of pilgrimage must be female (Mary, or a female saint)
2. The preferred geographic area is Northern Italy, although sites in
Southern France or in Northern Spain would be possibilities
3. The site must have been a pilgrimage destination by no later than
1400, and preferably by 1350. It is unlikely that any site will have
been unchanged during the intervening period, but we are attempting to
find a site which has received as little modification as possible,
especially in terms of the approach to the votive figure.
Thank you for your help,
Ron Ross
