There is excellent evidence that when the Wittenberg (Lutheran)
delegation left Torgau on 3 April 1530 to attend the Diet of Augsburg,
they took with them three chests of documents, one red, one black, and one
white. One of my colleagues, Lowell Green, made the observation that they
were in all liklihood colour-coded as to contents. The writ convoking the
Diet stated its purpose to be the settling of religious differences and
provision of the defense of the Empire against the Turk. Ultimately, the
Wittenberg delegation presented what is now known as the Augsburg
Confession at the Diet on Saturday, 25 June, beginning shortly after 3:00
in the afternoon. What they presented represented a large expansion of
the rough draft they had prepared at Torgau before they left. It seems
fairly certain that they must have had some other documents with them that
assisted them in expanding their rough draft. But what documents? In
which chest(s)? Of course all of the documents could not have been
theological in nature, since they were also dealing with military issues.
I've hit a dead end trying to figure out what was in those chests. I can
make some educated guesses, but guesses are lousy documentation.
If any list member stumbles over the inventory for those chests, please
e-mail me post haste!!!
Yours ever hopeful,
Frank
