medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All
From The Chicago Reader: 'The French fairy tale Peau d'ane transformed into a musical by the Umbrellas of Cherbourg team of director Jacques Demy and composer Michel Legrand. It doesn't come off, despite a dazzling color design and imaginative sets, perhaps because Demy's extremely rarefied talent for fantasy needs to be anchored by a touch of the real.'
A much longer critique from 'Senses of Cinema', explaining why it 'didn't come off' is at http://www.rottentomatoes.com/click/movie-1006116/reviews.php?critic=all&sortby=default&page=1&rid=226390
It seems good and evil were colour coded. All the king's scenes were given a blue wash, and all those involving the Prince Charming character have red. (Shurely some mishtake - Ed.) A high point appears to be a countrywoman who spits frogs. As the Senses of Cinema article points out, the plot was adapted from Charles Perrault's fairy-tale treatment, so there may not be much of the medieval here. Jo-Ann will put us right on this.
By-the-by, to get back to the saints, how is Dympne pronounced? Is there a Latin 'domina'/'dompna' in there somewhere? I see from Latham that Late Latin 'dympnia' means asthma.
All the best
Graham

Thank you for this, Jo Ann. Out of curiosity, and without wishing you to undergo any pain in the recollection, how would you rate _The Donkey's Skin_ (which, unless I've totaly suppressed it, I seem to have missed) vis-a-vis _Brother Sun, Sister Moon_? Are we talking about similar levels of achievement here? Best, John Dillon
