medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks, Martin - you're quite right. Rotha Mary Clay's volume is in that wonderful series, The Antiquaries' Books, published at a time when there was a public audience for such texts. I have plundered it for leads in constructing the TASC datasets for England. What I'm really after is a gazetteer of architectural and archaeological evidence (a squint or drip-mould here, a robber trench there) - and if there isn't one, there ought to be. Anyone know of a thesis in progress, maybe?
Best wishes
Graham

Graham:
In this connection there is an extensive listing in Rotha Mary
Clay's book _The Hermits and Anchorites of England_ (1914) of hermits' and
anchorites' cell-sites in England. (She lists them geographically by
county and indicates in each case whether the personage in question was
hermit or anchorite.) This falls short of the list of survivals you were
interested in but might make a useful starting point.
Cheers,
Martin
