Phyllis,
There was an "official" Carolingian response to the Byzantine
iconclast council of 787 -- or rather, to the papal rejection of the
Byzantine iconoclastic position -- known as the Libri Carolini. It
seems to me more and more a highly political document, and does not
unproblematically signal Carolingian attitudes towards images.
Although more recent work has been done on it, see Ann Freeman,
"Theodulf of Orleans and the Libri Carolini," Speculum, XXXII, no. 4
(Oct. 1957), 663-705. I, too, would like to know more about these
iconoclastic "fanatics".
Cheers,
