medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. April) is the feast day of:
Sabas and Companions (d. 272) Legend reports that Sabas was a Christian
officer of Gothic descent, martyred in Rome along with 70 companions. He
may be the same person as the Sabas commemorated on 12. April.
Gregory of Elvira (d. c. 400) Gregory was bishop of Elvira in southern
Spain. He was staunchly anti-Arian, refusing all compromise during the
fourth-century struggles for preeminence between the catholics and the
Arians.
Mellitus (d. 624) Mellitus was the first bishop of London (at least the
first post-Roman one; I assume that London had an episcopal see in the late
Roman Empire (?)). He had come to England in 601 at the head of a group of
missionary reinforcements sent by Gregory the Great. M. became bishop of
the East Saxons in 604. He was expelled when the king who sponsored him
died, but after a time in Gaul M. returned to England to become archbishop
of Canterbury.
Egbert (d. 729) Like Wilfrid, Egbert was Northumbrian and
Lindisfarne-trained. While studying in Ireland he came down with the
plague, and vowed peregrinatio for life if he survived. He wanted to go
and become a missionary on the Continent, but was prevented by a vision;
instead E. spent the last years of his life at Iona where his great triumph
(at least if one accepts Bede's priorities) was to get the Iona community
to calculate Easter the Roman way.
Ives (?) Four bodies were discovered in the village of Slepe (Huntingdon)
in the year 1001, one with episcopal insignia. A peasant's dream revealed
that this was the remains of a Persian bishop with the unlikely name Ives
(or Ivo). He is supposed to have come to England and lived as a hermit.
The relics were translated to Ramsey Abbey and were soon confirmed with
miracles. In time Slepe got the new name St. Ives.
