medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. April) is the feast day of:
herodion, Asyncritus, and Phlegon (1st cent.) Herodion was a kinsman of
St. Paul (cf Rom 16:11). According to legend, he was bishop of Patras, and
was martyred along with Bishop Asycritus of Marathon and Bishop Phlegon of
Hyrcania at the instigation of the Jews.
Dionysius of Corinth (d. c. 180) Dionysius was bishop of Corinth, but is
best known today as a writer. Several of his letters are still extant.
Aedesius of Alexandria (d. c. 306) Aedesius was a philosopher. He openly
professed Christianity, for which he was imprisoned several times and spent
time in the mines of Palestine. Finally he moved to Egypt for greater
safety, but was so outraged by the Roman governor turning consecrated
virgins over to pimps to be prostituted that he publicly complained. He
was drowned in the sea.
Walter of Pontoise (d. 1099) Walter was caught up in the intellectual
ferment of the eleventh century and became a teacher of rhetoric and
philosophy. But he gave it up to become a Benedictine monk at
Rabais-en-Brie, where he practiced great austerity. A few years later he
became abbot of the new monastery of Pontoise. To escape his popularity,
he fled to Cluny---but his monks fetched him back home. Then he ran away
to become a hermit---and was brought back again. Finally he went to Rome
and tried to convince Gregory VII to allow his abdication, but the pope
ordered Walter back to his abbacy.
Clement of St. Elpidio (blessed) (d. 1291) Clement was an Augustinian
hermit. He became general of the order in 1270, and in that office he drew
up the constitution of the order, for which he is considered the
Augustinian hermits' second founder.
