medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A student has asked me about the basis for prohibiting clergy from
shedding, which, as I understand it, affected not only participation in
warfare, but also imposition of penalties involving death or mutilation
and practicing certain kinds of surgery. Unfortunately, neither do I know
the answer, nor can I find it in any reference works I have available.
Can anyone help?
This provokes me to pose a related question of my own. Did monks have to
rely on lay phlebotomists to perform their regular bleedings?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Best wishes,
John
