I'd be grateful for any information relating to family membership of mobile
libraries. At the moment, our mobile libraries are not computerised, and we
are thinking through the practical issues associated with automation.
Readers can join our mobile libraries as individuals or families. If they
join as a family, we make out one membership record card and one Browne
ticket for the family, which both carry the name of the joining family
member and the number of adults or children associated with that person. The
advantage of one membership card and one ticket for a family is that it
saves time which is crucial at busy stops.
All books borrowed for anyone in the family have their bookcards put in the
same Browne ticket which means that all items are renewed automatically
together. I know there are library management systems which link tickets on
a family basis where the parent can renew items on associated children's
tickets, but are there Data Protection issues if it is two or more adults'
tickets linked in a similar way? Presumably the readers will have to learn
to remember to renew items on family tickets.
I'd like to know how other authorities have managed the transition from
manual to automated mobile libraries, and whether anyone has separate
membership for static and mobile libraries.
