medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear All,
Thank you for your many and varied responses. I, in my
literal-mindedness, envisioned "putrid stumps" as body
parts left behind (!) and could not imagine anyone
going near such a scene. Elsewhere in West's book, she
makes reference to the belief that only a human being
is an image of God, so the metaphorical usage of
"putrid stump" to describe a crucifix makes sense.
However, the term used is "cross," which implies lack
of a corpus. The "crawling with worms" is interesting
also. But I doubt anyone would have left standing a
cross/crucifix made of rotting wood. Or would they?
Was there something special about this particular
cross/crucifix?
Thanks again for your time and expertise.
MG
