Athanasius was in exile in 342. I think the incident referred to must be what took place in 339 at the beginning of Athanasius' second exile; according to the Festal Index which gives a chronological outline of his career, the troubles began on 18 March: 'On 22 Phamenoth he [Athanasius] was pursued in the night, and the next day he fled from the church of Theonas, after he had baptized many. Then, four days after, Gregory the Cappadocian entered the city as bishop'. The violence continued on the Friday before Easter (15 April), and Athanasius seems to have left the city the following Monday: he had been in Alexandria only since November 337 (the end of his first exile), and was not to return until 21 October 346.
