medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Odd, isn't it? I should have included that Farmer said what was cured was
Longinus' "incipient" blindness.
Farmer also makes a sarcastic comment about the absence of monasticism in
the real first century. But that's the joy of medieval legends of
saints---they're absolutely full of anachronism. Have you ever noticed how
many early Roman virgin martyrs were attacked either by "the king" or "the
king's son"---and that took place supposedly in the Roman Empire!
