medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Phyllis,
I don't know much about the Carmelites, but the "Lexikon für Theologie und
Kirche" gives some different dates on the two generations of medieval
founders (the early Carmelite eremites took prophet Elijah for their true
founder and ruler): In 1155 Saint Berthold of Calabria (French, from
Limoges/Salignac) was appointed superior by his uncle Aimeric, patriarch of
Antiochia (report of John Phokas in 1185). Berthold died in 1195. Saint
Brocard, his successor, was elected general prior in 1188 or 1189. In 1209,
Brocard got a new Carmelite rule by patriarch Albert of Jerusalem, former
bishop of Vercelli (b.1150 in Gualtieri/Italia, d.14 Sept 1214 in Akko).
This rule was confirmed in 1226 by Pope Honorius III. Brocard died on 2
Sept
1221. In 1240, the first Carmelites came to England, supported by count
Richard of Cornwall. Fourteen years later, King Louis the Saint took six
Carmelite monks to Paris and founded a monastery there.
More about Berthold and Brocard in the ActaSS March III, 791-92 an Sept I,
576, and in the BiblCarm I 286, 300-03.
I hope this helps avoiding confusion.
Werner
