No I think it was a matter of "political correctness"! At about this time a
number of freedom fighters / terrorist groups included the word "militant"
in their name and I think this was a deliberate attempt to disassociate the
C of E from the actions of such groups (even if members of the church
sympathised with the injustices which gave rise to these groups). Also there
has been a strong rise in the pacifist faction of the C of E combined with a
loss of undertanding of the concept of metaphor in the general public. Thus
it was feared that this phrase might be seen as an endorsement of actual
violence.
