medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (11. February) is the feast day of:
Gobnait (5th cent.) Gobnet was a native of Co. Clare, Ireland. She
settled in the Aran Islands for a time, but went on to found the church of
Kilgobnet and finally settled at Ballyvourney. G. was known as a skillfull
bee-keeper. Her pilgrimage is still alive today.
Caedmon (d. 680) Bede reports that Caedmon was a herdsman of Whitby, who
suddenly discovered his gift for song and poetry. He became a monk there
and produced a body of vernacular poems, none of which have survived, but
which were apparently very nifty.
Gregory II (d. 731) Gregory was a native Roman. He rose through the ranks
of the church and became pope. G. was an active and energetic pontiff,
holding synods, rebuilding churches, building hospitals and monasteries,
and asserting the independence of Rome against the iconoclast eastern
emperors.
Benedict of Aniane (d. 821) "The second Benedict," this Benedict was an
extremely intense and dedicated Benedictine monk who aided Emperor Louis
the Pious in his efforts to reform monastic observance throughout the
Frankish empire. B. was a courtier until he was 20, then had a conversion
experience that led to his monastic vows and a life of extreme austerity.
Fortunately he wasn't as harsh on his followers as himself, working to
impose the Benedictine Rule everywhere. He seems to have been rather
obsessed with uniformity.
