Dear collegues
I have student with very little mobility (has paraplegia) whose Study
strategies and assessment of needs does not work. The student relyes on 24
hrs care. The assessment failed to pick up the best equipment, did not
address a comprenhensive personal educational assistance, and so on. The
assessment centre has been contacted many times to readdress the student
needs. We have suggested a series of alternative equipoment (nothing magical
or creative, just a bit thoughful ) Originally the student was given as
little as possible. For example six hours of IT training for the student to
learn to use text to read and speech synthsisers sofware). Less than what a
abled bodied dyslexic student would have. Of caouse six hours for this
student is just enough to deal with her super moder mouse. I have talked
with the student assessor and no matter how much I ask him for his support
he seems unmoved. The student is not only failing in his/her course as the
equipment he/she uses just does not work. As a gesture of good will his/her
assessor has agreed to give the student a tape recorder. Of course the
recorder is a manual one to safe tax payers's resources (sic), and after
weeks of dealings. We requested a digital one, so the student could print
the readings out, cut and paste. You know, things that you do in this
century with the help of a personal assistant! Any advice. AV
