medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. January) is the feast day of:
Timothy (d. 97) Timothy was a disciple of Paul, the son of a polytheistic
father and Jewish mother. He became Paul's companion and occasional
representative. Eusebius says T. was the first bishop of Ephesus; the Acts
of Timothy report that he was martyred by a mob when he annoyed them during
a religious festival.
Titus (1st cent.) Titus shares his feast with Timothy since 1969. Titus
was also a disciple and companion of Paul. He is venerated as the first
bishop of Crete.
Paula (d. 404) Paula was a Roman noblewoman, widowed when she was 32. She
turned to a severely penitential lifestyle joined with almsgiving. P. came
under the influence of Jerome, and went with him to the Holy Land, settling
at Bethlehem. Paula spent the rest of her life aiding Jerome with her
money and her Greek scholarship.
Conan (d. 648) Conan was an abbot and bishop who was active in the
Hebrides and Isle of Man.
Alberic (d. 1109) Alberic was a hermit near Chatillon-sur-Seine. He and
his companions formed the core of the new monastery of Molesme, with
Alberic as prior. In 1098 Alberic and his fellow saints Robert and Stephen
Harding went off with followers to found Citeaux. Alberic became abbot in
1099 and bears the credit for the creation of the Cistercian order, along
with the other two founders.
Augustine of Trondheim (d. 1188) Augustine was born to noble family in
Norway. He studied in Paris and returned to become a royal chaplain. In
1157 A. was named archbishop of Trondheim (Nidaros). A.'s time as
archbishop was spent trying to enforce gregorian reform policies such as
clerical celibacy. This eventually led him to such conflict with King
Sverre that A. had to flee to England, where he lived for two years. A.
was regarded as a saint immediately after his death and a local synod of
Nidaros declared him thus in 1229, but the papal canonization process was
never completed.
