Building Overlapping Grids
==========================
AP had been asked to join today's meeting to discuss the Overlapping Grids
Document. He said the purpose of this was to get the grids working
together and for people to co-operate and recognise common standards of
working. This is being backed by Tony Hey at UK E-Science. He explained
that there were three areas where effort could be developed.
The first area is authorisation and the intention is to build a VOMS-VOM
gateway for users to make it easier for various groups to access common
facilities. He estimated that it would take a short time to set this
up.
The second area is finding resources through an information service.
Globus and EDG already use this facility through the GLUE schema. It is
believed that it will be straightforward to develop this further to link
other grids together.
The third area is resource broking which helps the user to find where the
relevant resources can be found. Testing has already begun on this using
NorduGrid architecture.
In general, the document was warmly welcomed by the PMB. AP said he has
not received comments yet from Tony Hey. TD said a list of recommendations
at the end of the document would be useful. JG said he would email his
comments to AP.(NEW ACTION)
ARDA DOCUMENT
=============
RJ was asked to speak about the ARDA document that had been produced by
the LHC Computing Grid w.r.t. distributed analysis. He said it was the
intention to build a prototype and that the LCG be recommended to set up a
project to do this. A report has already been given to SC2 and a decision
may be given on 12th December. It was suggested that a short statement
for SC2 be written and channelled through the PEB. There was further
discussion on other components and issues related to this. TD concluded
that the framework was useful as far as it went, but the review process
ariving at AliEn as a starting point implementation was not described. He
asked RM & RJ to draft an e-mail stating the PMB agreed input on this
important area.
(NEW ACTION)
AOB
====
TD said that Jeff Tseng had joined the JTB for GridPP and asked if PC
could give him the benefit of his past expertise in this role.
JISC - At the JCSR meeting last Friday Tony Hey had announced that he was
appointing 'champions' for various areas of IT to assist JISC in
targetting effort and money. TD will be the champion for Collaborative
Working.
TD asked for comments on the publicity leaflet recieved from e-Science and
said he had already sent a list of errors to Jim Fleming to be corrected.
All of the board members present said they did not like the title -
"Massive questions expected from GridPP". This could be adapted to
"Massive questions asked by GridPP" but the document was not acceptable
for further circulation in its present form. TD said he had no response
from the errata he had sent from JF or others at EPSRC.
AMcN and DC are presently at the SC2003 (along with PC who would be
arriving later today) and have reported that the demo is going well.
There were no further comments on the GridPP2 tender document.
It was noted that the board were grateful to the IT division of CERN who
said they would sponsor the dinner at the GRidPP10 meeting.
