Dear Richard
We are indeed starting from printed paper catalogues - as these date
back to 1970s and 1980s it is very unlikely that they exist in any other
format so, yes I think it's scanning or re-keying for us.

What are you starting from? Just the printed paper version? If so, you
are obviously stuck with scanning or re-keying. However, if you have
machine-readable "copy" I can report that I have had some success with
software which will convert Word sources into XML. Once you have your
data in this format, it is straightforward to convert to other formats -
and indeed re-publish it to both Web and into print.
