Effective e-Learning with VLEs
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) are becoming an important focal point
for the investigation and development of e-Learning, whether used for
learning support or for the actual delivery of courses. This workshop is
aimed at individuals who are either currently delivering or are preparing to
deliver some aspect of their current teaching provision using a VLE. The
workshop covers analysis, planning and design of the pedagogical aspects of
VLE courses. Please note, however, that the technical and administrative
aspects will NOT be covered.
VLEs often include a range of facilities to provide structured learning
content, online assessment, communication and collaboration tools and
student management. While they provide an important framework to facilitate
the online learning process, issues remain of appropriate and effective
usage.
The key to effective use of such environments is how well they are used to
support the process of learning. This workshop examines the effective
pedagogic use of a VLE across diverse levels of learning and teaching, and
aims to match existing practice with strategies for web based e-learning.
The Content
The workshop comprises presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions
with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants each receive a
workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and other
relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
Learning styles and levels of learning
Relationship between traditional learning and teaching, and online learning
Matching learners to delivery styles and content
Case study based comparison of VLE usage for effective learning
Electronic communication skills including moderation and group interaction
Use of online assessment to guide learning and teaching
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
Investigated different learner profiles
Evaluated a number of VLE case studies
Matched learning and teaching styles to delivery methods
Examined the impact of groups sizes on electronic communication
Explored techniques in moderating an electronic discussion
Investigated the use of online assessment to evaluate learner performance
Requirements
Participants should be familiar with the use of a computer keyboard and
mouse, Microsoft Windows based products and the use of a web browser such as
Netscape or Internet Explorer. An awareness of the basic concepts of Virtual
Learning Environments would be useful. This workshop does not aim to teach
specific skills in using any VLE products or creating web content.
