Background - why use images?
Today's students are growing up in a visual world, accustomed to receiving
information visually and often developing a learning style to which images
are integral. Further, there is pressure on educators to adopt technologies
that utilise visual media.
The JISC-funded Focusing Images for Learning and Teaching: an Enriched
Resource (FILTER) project aims to enable the use of images for learning and
teaching in further and higher education through Web-based resources,
useful case studies and examples covering a wide range of subjects in a
variety of formats. These materials have been created by FE/HE research and
teaching practitioners, supported by generic guidelines developed by the
project.
The workshops disseminate and support the use of these resources.
Workshop Aims
-To disseminate the findings of the FILTER project and explain how they can
benefit FE/HE education
-To introduce the issues and skills required to meet the needs of learning,
teaching and research practitioners who wish to understand the benefits and
limitations of using images
-To encourage good practice in image use through exemplars and resources in
the FILTER database
-To enable effective use of the project resources and provide hands-on
experience browsing and using the database
Content
The workshop content and activities are designed to share information and
experiences of image use based on the resources in the FILTER database.
Time will be divided into presentation, discussion and hands-on activities.
We hope to include:
-Research findings on effective use of images for learning and teaching and
image categorisation
-Case studies outlining the benefits, limitations and issues
-Exploration of exemplars of image use and guides for creation as well as
links to numerous resources
-Discussion of generic issues relating to resource creation, description
and management of images
Who should attend
Learning, teaching and research practitioners in UK FE/HE who wish to
create image-based resources and better understand the benefits and
limitations of using images.
These workshops are offered free of charge for UK FE/HE participants.
