David and others should be reassured that am well acqainted with the work of
David Webster. We have worked together for about six years running the
unemployment-research list (where this discussion really belongs). Think I
did as much as anyone else to encourage David to write the Radstats paper.
David Bishop should read Webster's paper again. It is not about the quality
of the Nomis dataset. It is about the range of statistics on unemployment
published by the ONS at that time. The nature of the statistics on
unemployment published by the ONS has changed dramatically since then. The
abandonment of the notorious workforce unemployment statistics in favour of
population based statistics has constituted the biggest and most
desperately needed reform in UK statistics since the institution of National
Statistics. David Bishop need to get up-to-date on what has happened to
official statistics .
The reference to Peck and Tickell is appreciated. It will help me to get
up to date with academic thinking.
I agreee of course, as previously emphasised, that the claimant count is a
very narrow definition of unemployment. Interpreting these statistics is
a challenge for all of us. But as far as the qualities in terms of
accuracy and consistency they are difficult to match. And as pointed out
more accurate and reliable than Manchester's population figures
So I look forward to seeing the results of an investigation as to where
those who left the claimant count went. That should throw some light on
the matter of comparability of the statistics over time . I hope that
David Bishop will post reports to the unemployment-research list where he
will find plenty of support.
