THE DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL ISSUES
Society for Social Medicine
DEVELOPING A FRAMEWORK FOR EQUITY IN THE NEW NHS
03 OCTOBER 2003
Royal College of Medicine, Wimpole St, London W1
The Society for Social Medicine will be holding a forward-looking
conference to consider current developments in the NHS, such as foundation
trusts and a regulated market in NHS care. How can the New NHS uphold the
fundamental principles of equity, access, and universality, and of services
free at the point of delivery?
Speakers including Prof John Mohan, Prof Azeem Majeed, Dr Rosalind Raine,
and Dr Michaela Benzeval will talk on equity and resource allocation in
planning and service provision in hospital and community care. There will
be plenty of time for discussion.
GLOBALISATION AND HEALTH POLICY
14 NOVEMBER 2003

Domestic health policy is increasingly shaped by global corporations and
global institutions, including the World Bank and the World Trade

from Michigan Law School, Prof Gill Walt of the London School of Hygiene &
Tropical Medicine, and Mike Rowson of Medact. Using case studies and with
reference to public health and law, they will discuss the setting of
international standards by the United Nations and the role of the World
Health Organization in the promotion of human rights, equity, and access to
essential services.
