Can you give some details of the type of galena deposits you mention?
Here in Wales, a very typical thing would be to see two outcrops od a
steeply-dipping lode, maybe 600m apart; in between there is overburden and
lots of little trenches/prospect shafts etc on its course.
I have little doubt that the course of these structures was also plotted by
the means of divining rods first then confirmed by useful (as opposed to
useless) excavations.
But you may have a stratabound deposit to mind in your original post?
