Alderley Edge in Cheshire had a cobalt mine. Here are a couple of
references:
Bakewell R. Account of a Cobalt Mine in Cheshire 111 Monthly Magazine 209
Vol 31 p7-9 1811
Adeane J.H. The Early Married Life of Maria Josepha Lady Stanley 246
various 1910
I can provide a bit more information if you wish. The amount mined is
believed to be very small and mining stopped when the Napoleonic war ended. A small
amount of cobalt was also isolated in the period 1857-60 but the company had
trouble finding a buyer. Part of Alderley Edge is scheduled as an ancient
monument because of the works where the cobalt was extracted in the 1860s, albeit
as a by-product.
