I have been doing some survey work on a site in South Wales
dating from about 1822 - which has the opposite problem: the
chimney remains, but the engine and boiler houses were
demolished. In this case the chimney is founded upon a raised area
of bedrock; had it too been demolished it could easily have vanished
without trace. There is no trace of the boiler, apart from a deposit of
clinker outside its presumed location alongside the engine house.
