In the Mendip area I would suggest Winford for red ochre (ST 535
638) and Axbridge, as previously suggested, for a browner variety.
Both localities are on (or very close to!) public footpaths. Further
afield there are many places in the Forest of Dean where ochre can
be found - almost any rock outcrop in the Crease Limestone will
yield some.
