APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
The 8th Annual SEDA Conference
Valuing Diversity and Promoting Inclusivity
Pre-Conference Day
Monday 17th November 2003
Novotel, Birmingham Centre
The pre-conference workshop day for 2003 focuses on one of SEDA's key
underpinning values. There have been many events and workshops in
recent years about coping with diversity and practicing inclusivity, in
the face of an increasingly diverse student population and pressures to
be more responsive to student needs. This event aims to take the
important further steps from coping with diversity and practicing
inclusivity towards valuing diversity and promoting inclusivity. The
workshops will enable participants to explore the staff development
issues involved in raising awareness of the value and benefits of
teaching diverse students and therefore the importance of encouraging
diversity by promoting an inclusive approach. In the process the event
will also enable participants to explore the implications of recent
government equal opportunities legislation as it impacts on higher
education.
Who should attend?
* Educational and staff developers
* Learning support staff
* LTSN centre, FDTL, P4P, and other HE learning and teaching
project staff
* National and institutional teaching fellows
* Teachers of higher education
Aims of the day:
* To provide a national forum for colleagues to share issues and
effective practice in promoting and responding to increasing diversity
in the student body.
* To encourage the dissemination of effective practice in
educational development to promote positive attitudes towards diversity.
* To provide time to reflect on the challenges, demands and
rewards of promoting inclusivity in HE.
* To address issues of race, gender, class, culture, disability,
religion and language as they impact upon the student experience of
learning.
Intended Outcomes:
The day is planned to enable participants to gain:
* Greater clarity on the differences between merely responding
to diversity and the greater goals of valuing diversity and promoting
inclusivity.
* Increased knowledge about the needs of diverse student groups
* New perspectives and ideas on inclusive philosophy
* An opportunity to highlight future needs
Processes:
The day will be dominated by workshop sessions, allowing plenty of time
to work through ideas and issues. The workshops will be led by
colleagues active in the field and will, in many cases, offer case
studies of innovative practice from across the sector.
The fee for the day is £100 per delegate, including lunch and
refreshments. A cheque made payable to SEDA or an official order should
be included when returning your registration form.
