Webster University Round-table on

THE CURRENT OUTLOOK FOR INTERNATIONAL ORDER

13 November 2003

The International Relations Program of Webster University, together with the

World Federation of United Nations Associations, is convening a Round-table

under the title The Current Outlook for International Order, to be held on 13

November 2003 at the International Conference Center of Geneva.

Today, less than fifteen years after the end of the cold war there is a new,

widespread preoccupation throughout the world with the outlook for

international economic, political and security order. Beyond the concern about

the outcome of crises such as Iraq, the deadlock in the Middle East, the

terrorist threat, the blackmail with weapons of mass destruction and the

tensions in the economic relations between developed and developing countries,

the sense of insecurity and disorientation is also due to a growing confusion

even about the desirable features of international order.

Thus the objective of the roundtable is to examine (1) the nature of the

current crisis, (2) the need to redefine and reaffirm the basic principles of

a democratic and peaceful international order and (3) the conditions for

strengthening the international order based on respect for freedom and human

rights, cooperation and solidarity as well as global security.

This event will be a follow-up to the Webster conference of November 2002 on

Global Challenges and the Atlantic Community and is part of a series of

conferences and seminars dealing with important contemporary humanitarian,

political and economic issues organized by the International Relations Program

of Webster University with the participation of the Geneva international

community. Attendance is open to the diplomatic community, international

organizations, the academic community, and the interested general public.
