Researcher for ICAR project – ‘Understanding the Stranger’
The Information Centre about Asylum and Refugees (ICAR) is based in the School of Social Science and Public Policy at King’s College London. It was set up in March 2001 to promote information based public debate and evidence based policy making on all issues relating to refugees and asylum in the UK context. ICAR is funded by charitable trusts
ICAR is looking for a full-time researcher to join its small, committed team to work on stage 1 of its exciting new project – ‘Understanding the Stranger’. The project will investigate the experiences of local areas of the UK that have received large numbers of asylum seekers, in order to identify what has succeeded and what has failed. Lessons learnt and best practice will be recorded and made available to other areas facing a similar situation.
The researcher’s job will be to:
- Carry out a literature survey of relevant research
- Design and carry out a method of investigating the experiences of selected local areas of the UK
- Devise and implement an appropriate format for writing up findings for dissemination and to inform the further development of the project
- Record contacts, projects, research and best practice into ICAR’s databases
- Attend meetings on behalf of ICAR and present on the project as required
- In conjunction with other ICAR staff members, keep up to date with Government plans for accommodation centres and other initiatives for housing large numbers of asylum seekers
- Carry out other appropriate tasks as required to complete the project
- Contribute to ICAR’s wider work on public debate of UK refugee and asylum issues
Person specification
Essential
- Proven research and writing skills
- Knowledge of UK refugee and asylum issues and of that sector
- Self starter with lots of initiative and the ability to think strategically
- Ability to relate to a wide variety of people and organisations
- Understanding of, and commitment to, the aims and objectives of ICAR
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to manage own workload and to work under pressure
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- IT literacy (including Internet and database research skills)
- Ability to travel around the UK and to work some evenings and weekends
Desirable
- Previous research experience involving the use of interviews and focus groups
Salary and conditions
The position is for 6 months full-time or equivalent. The full time annual salary rate is £21,413 p.a., inclusive of London Allowance (Research Grade1A Point 5). It will involve periods of travel around the UK and some evening and weekend work. The researcher will be based in ICAR’s offices in central London.
The position may be extended, funds and performance permitting.
Reporting
The researcher will report as necessary to the ICAR Project development officer and the ICAR Director.
