Sorry, John, I can't answer the question, but I am somewhat puzzled as
to why you should ask it! Why would you need a copy of the gazetteer or
equivalent? (The Dictionary appears to include grid references, for
instance.)
The thing that concerns me most about the Dictionary (apart from the
price) is that it is based on the (short-lived) 1974 administrative
counties rather than the traditional counties.
A useful gazetteer for the traditional counties is available from the
Association of British Counties at
http://www.abcounties.co.uk/newgaz/index.htm.

The Cambridge Dictionary of English Place-Names is now due to be
published
in November 2003, at a price of £175 (£200 after 3 months), and the
slogan
"The ultimate in place-name reference".
There is one point that has been worrying me for some time. It was
based on
the Ordnance Survey Road Atlas of Great Britain (1983). Does anyone
know
what is the closest modern equivalent? Or are there any remaining
caches of
the original edition?
