I was recently asked about the word 'Spaniorum' (which appears to be Latin
'of the Spaniards') in connection with the place-name 'Spaniorum Hill' (and
associated street-names, etc) in Easter Compton, Gloucs (near Bristol).
Smith (in PNGl) rather unhelpfully seems to regard it as a modern, minor
name and simply reports it as first appearing on the 1830 OS map. Can
anyone shed any light on it?
