I agree with you that verse perhaps is not the right word here, but I am
trying to make a distinction between prose and poetry on the basis of
something other than their apparent form - given that it is not possible to
say that a poem is a poem because the first letter of every line is
capitalised any more (nor has it ever really been the case) we have to find
other ways of doing that. I'm just throwing out a tentative suggestion on
the basis of the 'spirit' that guides a use of language.
I deliberately didn't want to talk about performance writing, perversely
because I think it's most relevant here - it's only that there are so many
other issues involved (I mentioned audience and reception in a previous
mail) that I didn't feel I could do it justice in this context.
