We have been following the recent debate about charging for answering
enquiries with keen interest. Like many offices we are considering
introducing a charged research service, to cover all enquiries which entail
looking in original sources (rather than merely providing information about
what records we hold, which will remain free). We would be interested to
know how other record offices have addressed the question of social
inclusion/exclusion which arises with the introduction of a paid service,
ie. do other offices have a reduced range of charges for certain categories
of people such as the old, disabled, unemployed, who for differing reasons
might be unable to visit in person; if so what formal criteria are employed
to identify such people? I would be very interested to hear of other
office's experiences/policies in this regard.
Yours sincerely,
Mike Page, head of acquistions, Surrey History Centre
