Following the reorganisation of the magistrates courts in Surrey, Surrey
History Centre is faced with the prospect of taking in large quantities of
court registers, many of which will be closed for a good many years, and
when open are very little used, relating as they do to minor offences,
except by the police and courts pursuing earlier convictions. The Lord
Chancellor's Department's record retention schedule allows local record
offices to charge for the storage of records under 25 years old and also
states that the registers might be microfilmed and the originals destroyed.
Have any other offices pursued either of these options, particularly the
second? If the registers were microfilmed did the onus rest on the court
to organise and fund the programme, with the place of deposit merely acting
in an advisory capacity, or am I being naive?
I would be very pleased to hear of other office's experiences and
suggestions.
