medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. December) is the feast day of:
Synesius (d. c. 285) According to legend, Synesius was a magician, ordered
by Diocletian to poison Bishop Theopompus of Nicomedia. Synesius was so
impressed when the duly administered poison had no effect on the holy
bishop that he converted to Christianity. Diocletian wasn't happy.
Theopompus was tortured and finally beheaded; Synesius was buried alive.
Finnian of Clonard (d. 549) A native of Leinster, Finnian founded several
monasteries in Ireland, then went to study monasticism in Wales, then
returned to Ireland for more monastic foundations---the most important of
which was Clonard (Co. Meath). Legend makes Finnian the "teacher of the
saints of Ireland," especially the twelve apostles of Ireland. He died of
plague.
Vicelin (d. 1154) The German Vicelin was educated in Paderborn, then
directed a school at Bremen. He was ordained by Norbert of Xanten, and in
1126 began missionary work among the western Wends. His work ran into
problems as patrons died, Obodrite pirates attacked him, etc. In 1149 V.
became bishop of Oldenburg. He is accounted the apostle of the Wends.
Hartmann of Brixen (d. 1164) Hartmann was raised by Augustinian canons at
Passau, and entered the order himself. After holding a number of offices,
he became bishop of Brixen in 1142. His exemplary life, especially care of
the poor, led to his reputation as a saint during his lifetime.
Ida of Nivelles (d. 1231) Ida became a Cistercian nun at a convent near
Leuven (Belgium) at the age of sixteen. She had numerous visions and was
credited with many miracles, most notably the ability to get souls out of
Purgatory by sharing in their suffering.
Conrad of Offida (d. 1306) The Italian Conrad became a Franciscan at the
age of fourteen. The zeal with which he embraced radical poverty led to
his nickname as "the second Francis."
