medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. December) is the feast day of:
Anysia of Salonika (d. 304) Anysia was the daughter of a wealthy family.
She took private vows of poverty and chastity. One day she was accosted by
a Roman soldier who, when he discovered she was a Christian, beat her, and
set out to drag her to a temple to force her to sacrifice. She resisted;
he ripped off her veil; she spit in his face; he murdered her.
Appian and companions (d. c. 483) Appian and nine others were killed in
Alexandria during Monophysite rioting.
Germer of Fly (d. c. 660) The latest in the recent run of pious
Merovingian officials. Germer was an official at the Frankish court, but
in c. 650 left his family, founded two monasteries, became a monk and
abbot.
Egwin (d. 717) Egwin was bishop of Worcester 693-711 and founder of
Evesham abbey. The eleventh-century vita of Egwin reports that he was of
Mercian royal blood. When he was bishop, a faction denunced him to the
king and the archbishop of Canterbury, forcing him to abdicate. But Egwin
wanted to vindicate himself, so he fettered himself, threw the key into the
Avon, then went to Rome. There he found the key to his fetters inside a
fish at the market. The pope exonerated E. and sent him back to his
diocese. It's pleasant to note that Egwin was again vindicated after the
coming of the Normans: his relics passed an ordeal by fire, and further
proved themselves with miracles and a fund-raising tour through southern
England.
Diego of Osma (d. 1207) The Cistercian Diego became bishop of Osma
(northern Spain) in c. 1200. He was a patron of Dominic, and gave the
original impetus to the preaching mission of the Dominicans by stopping in
Languedoc on his way home after a papally-sponsored mission, sending away
his horses and fine clothes, and preaching in active competition to the
Cathar perfecti of the area.
