medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Frank Barlow in his biography of Thomas Becket (London, 1986) reports that
"Beket" was the surname attached to Thomas' father Gilbert. Thomas
himself never used it, and if it was used to refer to him at the time it
was probably in derision of his non-noble origins. The "à Becket" is a
post-Reformation invention.
