medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. November) is the feast day of:
Vitalis and Agricola (d. c. 304) Ambrose reports that Vitalis was a slave,
converted by his evangelizing master Agricola. They were martyred at
Bologna, Agricola inspired by V's steadfastness to face a shameful
death---probably crucifixion. Ambrose found their relics in Bologna in
393, including the cross and nails used in Agricola's execution.
John Zedaznali and companions (6th cent.) This was a group of twelve
Syrian monks. They evangelized Georgia---at least until their whole
community was massacred by disgruntled pagans.
Joannicius of Mt. Olympus (d. 846) Joannicius was a Bithynian. He served
as a Byzantine soldier for 20 years after which he became a monk, then a
hermit---constantly moving from place to place because he kept attracting
followers. When the second iconoclast persecution began in 818, J. opposed
it, although he had supported iconoclasm before. He was notable for
recommending moderation during the controversy. J. was also known for the
gift of prophecy, and consulted by leading church figures.
Clarus of Rouen (d. c. 875 or 894) Clarus was an Englishman who went to
the continent after being ordained priest. He became a monk and then
hermit in the diocese of Rouen. He was murdered, according to legend by
two assassins hired by a woman whose advances he had rejected.
Saint-Clair-sur-Epte is named after him.
Emeric (Imre) of Hungary (d. 1031) Emeric was the son of Stephen and
Gisela. He was killed in a hunting accident before succeeding to his
father's throne. There were many miracles reported at his tomb, and he was
canonized along with his father in 1083.
