There are still a few spaces on the National Acquisitions Group seminar
'Promoting Libraries' to be held at CILIP HQ on 11th December.
Speakers for the day are:
Michael Carpenter - Audit Commission
Michael Carpenter was project manager for the Audit Commission's recent
report "Building Better Libraries". His session will revisit the report's
key messages and discuss the reaction to, and progress since, the report was
published in May. He will also discuss the contribution that better stock
selection and improved stock management can make to meeting the challenges
highlighted in the report.
Norma Monks - Head Of Cultural Services, Blackburn with Darwen Library
Service
Titling her session 'Altered Images: The Challenge of Change' Norma Monks
will give a very personal view of the way in which libraries and librarians
need to change in order to meet local and national demands and opportunities
and high public expectation and competition.
David Lindley - Director, Books for Students Ltd
David Lindley will focus on what he considers to be the five basic
principles of a marketing strategy for public library services, drawing
parallels with marketing in the commercial and retail sectors and using
examples from public sector practice. He hopes that the few points he can
make in the available time will help librarians to develop a coherent
marketing approach to the internal strategic planning processes that are
designed to 'build better libraries'.
Tom Forrest - Director, Opening the Book
Tom Forrest will look at redesigning library services from a reader-centred
point of view. This includes a new reader-centred approach to stock policy
and developing new ways to increase understanding of how people use
libraries. How then to use that knowledge in conjunction with techniques
developed in the retail sector to improve services and create display
furniture to help make the library a welcoming space and improve the library
experience for more people will also be covered in this session.
Penny Shapland - The Reading Agency
The Reading Agency is a new national library development agency with a
vision to inspire a reading nation working through libraries.
www.readingagency.org.uk <http://www.readingagency.org.uk> . The Reading
Agency's raison d'etre is promoting reading. It has a raft of strategies and
resources to help libraries attract new readers and to extend the reading
horizons of existing readers. Penny will talk about the new agency and
describe the various ways that TRA can help libraries with promotion.
