medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (6. September) is the feast day of:
Onesiphorus and Porphyrius (d. c. 80) Onesiphorus appears in Paul's second
letter to Timothy (1:16-18 and 4:19). According to tradition. O. followed
Paul to Spain, but then returned to the East. He was martyred somewhere on
the Hellespont (torn apart by wild horses). Porphyrius was a member of O's
household, who helped O in his work.
Augustine, Sanctian, and Beata (d. 273) These three were natives of Spain.
They fled to Gaul to escape persecution, but were martyred at Sens.
Eleutherius of Spoleto (d. c. 590) Eleutherius was abbot of St. Mark's
near Spoleto. He was famed for the simplicity of his life and his miracles
(including raising somebody from the dead). The reason we know of him,
though, is that E. joined the monastry of St. Andrew's, Rome (founded by
Gregory the Great) and lived there for many years as a simple monk.
Gregory lauded Eleutherius in his Dialogues.
Chainoaldus of Laon (d. 633) Chainoaldus was a Frank who became a monk of
Luxeuil and then bishop of Laon. But when Columbanus was exiled from
Francia, Chainoaldus abandoned his see to accompany the saint first to the
Lake Constance region, then to Italy. He only returned to his diocese
after Columbanus had died.
Bertrand of Garrigue (blessed) (d. 1230) Bertrand, a native of the region
of Nimes (France) was a secular priest and active opponent of the Cathars.
He met Dominic on D's first visit to southern France in the entourage of
Bishop Diego of Osma. It may have been Bertrand who convinced Dominic to
help fight the Cathars; certainly the two worked closely together for the
rest of their lives. Bertrand joined the nascent Order of Preachers in
1216. He played a very important role in establishing the tradition of
Dominican learning, but is best known as Dominic's closest friend and
travelling companion.
