medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello!
I forwarded some of the recent thread on relics to my brother (admittedly
not a medievalist! but he does have a bit of catholic knowledge) and he had
some questions... I would really appreciate any thoughts on these to give
him more to think about (other than "relic beer").
Thanks!
Sara

"There are three classes of relics.
1st class: A physical bit of the person or something like that.
2nd class: Something touched to that person eg clothing that they wore.
3rd class: something touched to a 1st or 2nd class relic.
So in other words, if say there was a hand of St. Beatrice on display you
could
go there and touch your hockey stick or your beer bottle to it and BOOM 3rd
class relic. Anyone for St. Beatrice relic beer?
So the question is... is illicit trade in 3rd class relics (souvenir shop
variety) an unsanctioned event or are they really trying to protect the
trade in
1st and 2nd class relics?
Further to the discussion on John the XXIII relics, if it were a 1st or 2nd
class relic of Mr. XXIII it would have to be a relic after he was/is/maybe
canonized so is it possible to make a relic out of a relic that might be or
do
you have to wait for the pomp/circumstance/mircale/cannonization for that to
occur?"
